Katie is addressing adult obesity in the East Lake area of Birmingham, Alabama by implementing nutrition education classes for residents in this area. This program will emphasize goal setting and hands-on learning to elicit behavior change and purchasing decisions at a local grocery store. Purchases will be tracked via a discount card that participants will scan when they checkout at the Village Market and analyzed to determine trends and changes in purchasing behavior. This program aims at expanding participants’ relationship with food to include improved cooking efficacy, increased fruit and vegetable intake and increased understanding of nutrition, health and the relationship between them
