826 Boston seeks a mission-driven change-maker to serve as the 2022-23 STEM Literacy Specialist, AmeriCorps VISTA. 826 Boston offers programs that affirm students as future leaders in STEM. Our unique niche connects critical thinking and communication. Our approach not only brings more students to STEM—it supports the student voice, storytelling, and problem-framing that students need to advance systemic change.
Serving as the STEM Literacy Specialist is a challenging yet rewarding experience. Through your year of service, you will enable 826 Boston to empower students to find their voices, tell their stories, and gain critical communication skills. The role is designed to support individual students, teachers, and schools through capacity building projects. You will develop resources and relationships to support, build, and evaluate the impact of 826 Boston’s high-quality STEM literacy programming.

Key Responsibilities and Functions
- Assist with expanding 826 Boston’s Science Fair Boot Camp program to serve more students in addition to diversifying our STEM tutor corps to provide representative STEM field volunteers as mentors for students.
- Partner with existing 826 Boston in-schools programs to support school-based science fair programs
- Assist with evaluating existing curriculum resource library and developing new resources focused on supporting students in writing science reports
- Develop a series of training modules to prepare 826 Boston staff, service members, and volunteers to provide high-quality STEM literacy programming to K-12 students.
- Assist with identifying and building partnerships to increase the number of volunteers with STEM education/professional experience and leverage resources to ensure high quality and rigorous STEM literacy programming at 826 Boston.
- Assist with coordinating and conducting evaluation for STEM literacy programming to measure and monitor student progress, inform program design, and report out on impact to stakeholders.
The ideal candidate possesses some of the following skills and experiences:
- High school diploma
- Demonstrated interest in the intersection of STEM content areas and writing
- Interest in teaching/tutoring writing to students grades K-12 in an urban setting
- Interest in developing training guides, lesson plans, and tutor guides
- Ability to coach and mentor volunteers and interns
- Ability to adapt to various working and management styles
- Ability to participate in open communication to build community and foster team goals including the advancement of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Proficiency in organizational, time management, project management, and resource management skills
- Proficiency and/or willingness to learn virtual platforms such as Microsoft Office, Zoom, Seesaw, and Google Apps
- Proficiency in Cape Verdean Creole, Haitian Creole, Arabic, or Spanish preferred, but not required
- Familiarity with the Boston Public Schools system, particularly the schools in Roxbury, Dorchester, and Jamaica Plain preferred, but not required
