Deliver Food Boxes to the Families and Youth of Alder Elementary this Spring! (PSU Serve Your City *Series*)

Care about youth, education, and access to nutritious food? Have a car or cargo bike? Support the children and families of Alder Elementary by helping deliver essential food boxes this Spring, from April through early June! 

Work alongside other PSU volunteers to assemble the food boxes and then head out on your delivery shift to get them to families in the Alder community. Volunteer shifts will take place every other week on Fridays starting April 1st! This program supports a decades-long relationship between PSU and Alder Elementary through the nonprofit Greater Than.

Greater Than is leading the charge of providing food boxes, resources, and educational materials to the residents of the Alder Elementary community. By joining this program, you will have the opportunity to assist with the preparation and distribution of many vital resources to the Alder community through bi-weekly delivery shifts.

If you feel the need to get off the computer and out of your chair, this is a great opportunity to get into the community and serve! 
This is an in-person and socially distanced volunteer opportunity. Greater Than and SCEC have committed to making this in-person volunteer opportunity as safe as possible to stop the spread of COVID-19.

Where: Throughout the Alder Community - SE148th Ave to SE 202nd Ave

When: Every other Friday morning from 11-1pm, from April through early June

  •  Includes the following dates: 4/8, 4/29, 5/13, 5/27, 6/10


Orientation: 
Orientation materials will be sent before the first shift and training will take place 10am - 11am on your first "shadowing" shift, on Friday, April 8th. Please be able to arrive an hour early on this first day!

Requirements & Qualifications: 

  • Be enrolled at PSU during the FY21-22 school year

  • Maintain institutional an undergraduate GPA of 2.0 or a graduate GPA of 2.5

  • Ability to physically deliver food boxes to families residences using your own transportation. Most volunteers deliver food boxes using their own cars (you'll need provide proof of insurance), though it could be possible to do deliveries via cargo bike as well. 
  • Agree to commit to regular bi-weekly volunteer shifts on the following days: 4/8, 4/29, 5/13, 5/27, 6/10

  • Ability to lift and transport boxes, maintain confidentiality, and communicate via cell phone are required

  • Ability to pass a background check with Reynolds School District
  • Ability to speak Spanish or another language is helpful, though not required.

  • No prior food box experience needed.
Our Community Partner: Alder Elementary is a school in the Reynolds School District rich with diversity and resilience, in which 27 different languages are spoken by students and their families. Greater Than's mission is to support and empower students from poverty-impacted communities to thrive in school, college, and career.
