About

About Serve Your City

We are guided by the principle of “Solidarity, not Charity.” We, the community, keep us safe for our common survival and well-being and share a common responsibility.

For more than a decade, Serve Your City has provided life-changing experiences and opportunities for at-risk DC students, giving Black and Brown children access to rowing, swimming, yoga, tennis, tutoring, and inspiring experiences often not readily available to children from under-resourced families.

Serve Your City is the lead partner in Ward 6 Mutual Aid, a partnership of more than three dozen organizations—many of them hyper-local, Black- or Brown-led groups—that came together to share resources and save lives after the COVID-19 pandemic struck the District beginning in March 2020.

Environmental Justice Working Group

The daily work of Serve Your City/Ward 6 Mutual Aid  (SYC/W6MA) is necessary due to centuries of structural and systemic injustices in the District which have had an outsized impact on Black and Brown residents, Native Washingtonians, and Immigrant Communities. These injustices are not due to failures in policy-making, but have been intentionally created by individuals and communities in power to maintain their power. That is why the majority of SYC/W6MA work is done outside of these structures and systems which actively harm the communities we are in solidarity with.

SYC/W6MA also recognizes the importance of continuing to push policy-makers, government institutions, and elected officials to listen and follow the lead of the communities most impacted by the harm created by their choices. Our role as the SYC/W6MA Environmental Justice Working Group is to learn from those community groups and leaders, help amplify their demands, add capacity to their efforts, and ultimately address the structural causes of the environmental injustices impacting predominantly Black, Brown, Native Washingtonian, and Immigrant residents everyday.

General Overview

Serve Your City/Ward 6 Mutual Aid is recruiting an environmental justice intern to support our work around the District’s Lead Free DC Initiative. Specifically, the summer intern will be working within the Environmental Justice Working Group to develop a pilot campaign to inform Black and Brown community members of their options for testing their water for lead and for enrolling in lead service line replacement programs as part of DC Water’s Lead Free DC By 2030 Initiative.

Ideal candidates are self-motivated, organized, and committed to achieving justice for Black and Brown people in DC. Your internship will begin on approximately 1 June 2022 and will end on approximately 1 September 2022. During this internship, you will work 5-10 hours each week on a mutually-agreed upon schedule, shadowing the team lead for the Working Group as your main supervisor, along with other members of SYC/W6MA as makes sense. Following the guidance from the core organizers and staff of SYC, you will help initiate a pilot program by designing and performing small-scale neighborhood outreach.

The purpose of this internship is to benefit your education by providing you with a hands-on learning experience in the community with SYC/W6MA, including local environmental justice policy, community organizing, and science communication skills.

You will not be paid for your time spent at SYC/W6MA pursuant to this internship and you will not be entitled to any employment-related benefits. SYC/W6MA will provide a payment of $600 to cover any expenses incurred as part of the internship, inclusive of digital access and transportation.
