About

Hello!

Update Transporters: please wear hair nets, hats, or other type of head covering when going inside of the fridge and freezers at the grocery stores!

We pick up food from grocery stores in Kernersville: Food Lion on North Main St and Harris Teeter on South Main St. If you are able to help, you carry badges, coolers, ice packs, and follow the pick up protocol. We welcome you to join our team. We hold a training to help you get familiar with the process. The training is according to your schedule and does not have to be complete before you begin, but it has to be done if you want to be an ongoing volunteer with us to make sure you are aware of the details. Thanks!!

ALL: Volunteer Lead packs the coolers, ice packs, and badges before arriving to stores. Make sure you know who the volunteer lead is...because it might be YOU! :)

Sundays:
Please meet at the NAACP building at 3 sharp. 4130 Oak Ridge Drive, Winston Salem, NC 27105
Drivers will arrive at Food Lion on South Main St Kernersville; 980 South Main St at 3:20 (ask for Brad or Eddie if there is no produce, meat, or deli to pick up--all of these departments must be picked up). Then you will head to Food Lion on 617 North Main St Kernersville

Wednesdays: Please meet at Harris Teeter on South Main St. Kernersville at 11 am, then head to 617 North Main St. Kernersville

Thursdays: Please meet at Food Lion on North Main St Kernersville at 11:45 am

EVERYONE: Pick up items in this order:
1) Produce
2) Meat
3) Deli/Bakery

EVERYONE TRAVELS TOGETHER!! Please do not have separate cars go to one location or the other, and stay together in the store while you pick up the food from each department. Please travel back to the NAACP building together, following each other's cars. It is very important to stay together to help prevent miscommunication. Thank you.

Try to keep the food from the different stores separate so we can credit the food to the correct store when we weigh the food and do our monthly reports. We also weigh the food that is not usable and compost it, and we want to make sure this is credited to the correct store as well. We are actively working with the store managers to decrease the amount of food we have to compost or gets thrown away, so this step of weighing is VERY important.

We have separate coolers in order to be able to do this. However, we never know how much food we will get from one store to the other, so it may not always work our perfectly with keeping food separate from store to store. We do our best. :)

Drivers: please stay together on the highway and in the stores. IT IS SO IMPORTANT!! Thank you. :)

Food will be organized when you return.

Thursdays and Wednesdays we have a regular crew and we ask that you meet at the grocery store. Mr. Grey is the lead unless he is out Thursdays and Mr. Bennett is the lead Wednesdays. Please make sure you know who is leading the day you register.

Sundays we have a different crew each time and we meet at the NAACP building at 3pm before we head out to organize and coordinate.

A few things to keep in mind: We are a beginning initiative, and the operation may not be as tight as what you may be used to. For example, we are completely supported by donations and volunteers. We house our pantry and garden by the goodwill of those sponsors. To this end, you may arrive, and doors may be locked or folks may not be there when you arrive. Make sure that you know ahead of time who your contact person is before arriving. Usually you will receive an email or text message, if you don't, message the admin on Givepulse.

We hold our pantry within the building in the NAACP. There will be someone who will either call me to open the building or someone will call the President to open the building.
Masks are required inside the NAACP building. We serve mostly elders for our pantry, so extra precautions are always taken. If you experience any Covid symptoms, please let me know so we can get you rescheduled.

We compost the food the is too bad to give out or that is excessively a surplus. We expect folks to help by unwrapping the coverings, disposing either recycling or trash, and putting the actual food in our compost container, layering with browns (leaves, saw dust, wood chips etc), and setting aside to be dropped off at our main garden site.

We are grassroots, so you may be asked to do something or see something not listed or spoken of, be we appreciate it when folks see a need and just jump in to help.  Please watch our training videos here. We try to be as transparent, but we forget things too! :)
We will try to have a few minutes before we start so that all can introduce themselves. You will have fun seeing people come in, and just being with others. So enjoy!
