About

PURPOSE: The Aquarist Internship is an unpaid, semester-long experiential learning opportunity. Interns will have the unique opportunity to assist in the daily husbandry and maintenance required for the museum’s live aquatic collection and their corresponding life support systems. Currently the museum holds 100 aquatic species in its collection, including threatened and endangered species. Interns will gain experience in the husbandry and maintenance required to sustain these species. The intern may also be called upon to assist with administrative record-keeping.

DUTIES: 

  • Water chemistry and water quality monitoring
  • Exhibit cleaning/maintenance (ex. gravel washing)
  • Food preparations and feeding
  • Public feeding programs
  • Other duties as assigned, based on good performance, proficiency and motivation

APPLICATION PROCESS: The Virginia Living Museum takes applications for interns three times a year. Internships are typically 12-14 weeks long, and may include working on weekends and holidays. The internship semesters are as follows:

  1. Spring: January/February – May. 
  2. Summer: May/June – August. 
  3. Fall: September – December. 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Interns must be at least 18 years of age. Internships are available for current college students or recent graduates with a strong career interest in the fields of ichthyology, marine biology, aquatic ecology, conservation or similar. Candidates must be able to work independently.

EXPECTATIONS:

  • Interns are expected to work a minimum of 4 hours a week; shifts are 9A - 1P or 1 - 5P 
  • Interns are required to work 1 Touch Tank shift per week
  • Be dependable and responsible
  • Be able to manage time (be on time, watch time for public programs, etc.)
  • If not able to come to shift, communicate with Aquarium staff.
  • Communicate well with staff, fellow volunteers and guests
  • Have an appreciation, even passion, for aquatic nature and conservation
  • Be comfortable keeping busy, and getting clothing wet/dirty at times

ATTENDANCE POLICY:

The Aquarium Department allows no more than three call outs per semester. It is imperative that their supervisor has no less than 48 hours notice of any absence, unless the absence is due to a valid emergency situation. 

PROJECT:

Interns are expected to complete a short paper on a subject to be determined with Aquarium staff.

EVALUATION:

Interns will take part in formal evaluations at the mid- and end-point of the internship. Staff will monitor and judge their progress, motivation, improvement and dedication. 

SUPERVISOR: 

Interns will report directly to the Aquarium Curator & Senior Aquarist
