Event Description

This volunteer event has the greatest need for volunteer assistance and involves directly distributing food to our clients by assisting our delivery driver on their regular routes. Volunteers must be 16 and older to attend this volunteer event.

The Senior Staples Program is aimed to assist elderly struggling with food insecurity by providing a substantial bag of food for food assistance. These 35-40 pound brown paper bags are filled with a variety of nutritious, shelf-stable foods and beverages with additional produce and dairy product. This position not only assists in distributing food to our clients, but also in picking up donations from local grocery stores on our driver's regular route.

Responsibilities:
Volunteers assigned to this position will ride along with our delivery driver in a Food Bank van to deliver 35-pound grocery bags to a list of individual clients. For each location, the volunteer will walk a bag to the client's door, ring the doorbell and notify them of a Food Bank delivery, and return back to the Food Bank van. Some locations for delivery may be shared living facilities in which you may assist the driver in delivering bags to the correct numbered dormitory.

When assisting in receiving donations, the volunteer will simply help load and organize donated product into the vehicle and assist in unloading and organizing food by category for inventory purposes after returning to the Food Bank.

Because of the time-sensitivity for this event, it is crucial that volunteers have arrived at the facility and signed in by 9:15AM for departure by 9:20AM. Because this position is off-site, a bathroom during this shift may not be guaranteed (although the driver may be able to stop at a public restroom during deliveries if requested, although not guaranteed). While this shift is posted from 9:15AM to 1:00PM, depending on the delivery schedule, volunteers may complete this activity earlier, but not later, than listed and will be credited the full allotted time for this event.

Closed-toe shoes are required to attend, and carpooling is strongly encouraged when possible due to limited parking. Upon arrival, please visit the main lobby through the glass door. Enter the door labeled "Volunteer Department” where you will be greeted by Volunteer Department staff.

As a reminder, we do not offer court-mandated community service hours for volunteer work.

First-time volunteers should always review our Volunteer Page to review any updates and Covid-19 regulations, as well as to read through our Volunteer Handbook, which covers instructions for events, dress code, programs, and submit our New Volunteer Survey. This event is not open to those ages 16 and younger.
